You're right about mobile phones though, my son went off to Uni a few weeks ago and despite being a 100 miles away is able to keep in touch and tap me up for money via mobile phone, email and instant messaging. When I was his age there was a pay phone in the halls of residence and once a week I would save up my 10p's and queue for an hour so I could speak to my mum and dad. The jury is still out in the Keef residence as to whether or not progress is a good or a bad thing. Another major technical advance in that regard is the cash machine, when I was a student I would have to go the bank on Friday afternoon and cash a cheque for enough money to last me through the weekend and if I ran out, I would either have to cadge off other poverty-stricken students till Monday or face a stark choice between food and beer.
