I bumped into an old colleague whilst in London last week.

We did the usual two minute chat about how each other was doing, and he then pretended he was much more successful than he really is. He then asked who I was still in touch with from the company where we both used to work. I still see a number of the old graduates socially, and told him as much, at which point he asked me to pass on his regards and tell them he was asking after them.

Afterwards, I realised what an utter fool I am. Clearly he is just trying to save the cost of a phone call by using me as a messenger. How hard is it to phone someone to say Hello? Why should I do it for him?

I am not particularly in the habit of asking people how they are at the best of times, without expecting me to do it on other peoples behalf.

What if they have a message in return? At what point can you you stop being a conversation conduit and tell them to fuck off and talk amongst themselves?

From now on, if someone asks me to say hello to someone my stock answer is, “Fuck off and call them yourself you tight bastard.”

I am already 30p better off as a result.
