“Give the greatest gift of all. Give Blood.” read the poster.
It made me think. Personally, I think that cash is a great gift, but clearly the blood people have other ideas, but then they would say that, wouldn’t they? I suppose blood is, quite literally, the gift that comes from the heart. And I suppose it avoids having to go gift shopping to get it.
I find myself disagreeing about its status as the greatest gift of all, however.
Back at school I had a friend with a small, and perfectly normal, infatuation with another girl in my class. One day, to illustrate this perfectly normal obsession, he gave her a small freezer bag of his blood, whereby she screamed, and then fainted. And not in the good way. I think he is a policeman now.
I would imagine, that even with the benefit of almost twenty years of hindsight, she still does not think it was the greatest gift of all. She might see this poster and realise that she was wrong all along. How she will rue spurning his affection.
Perhaps I will look her up on Facebook and ask her how she feels about it now. After all, what is Facebook for, if not searching out people you have not seen for nearly twenty years to ask them about their memory of receiving bags of bodily secretions at school.
And for the record people, it should always be cash, not blood. Cash. Not blood.
