Just wanted to let people know there is an alternative available — The first Open, Free and Collaborative Internet ratings service — Quantcast. (I work for there)

Many are familiar with our audience estimates – however we also allow publishers to get even more accurate data through direct measurement by signing up for the free “Quantified Publisher program”.

So far we have had tremendous response – publishers of all sizes have signed up and are loving the service — Publishers are delighted to be able to accurately represent their audience via a 3rd party source in front of potential advertisers, colleagues and investors.

The service is free and we put the publisher in control. If a publisher wants to hide various parts of their audience report they are free to do so, if they want to share all data they can as well.
Publisher control is of paramount impotance to us.

I recommend statcounter.com – it’s free, you can have it with or without graphics on your page, and it gives you just as much info as sitemeter (well, as sitemeter did in the days I used it around 3 years ago). If even gives you a google map with flags on it representing where your visitors come from. It’s surprisingly accurate. Apparently, I have a reader in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, about four hundred miles off the west coast of Africa.

I have sitemeter on my blogs but I got bored using it, especially once Google Image Search got me catalogued and the results were worthless. Now I have a reason to remove them.
