Just because something’s free…

…does not make it a good thing.

I have just purchased a dinner suit for a friends 30th birthday party on a boat whilst sailing up and down the Thames this weekend. It’s a posh affair so I thought I’d better make an effort. The suit shop in town had a ‘Special Offer’ which ensured all dinner suits came with a free shirt and bow-tie. This is a very good thing if you don’t own a wing-collar shirt or bow tie. However, if you do own one, like me, then it’s frankly as useful as David Blunkets squash racket.

I own a very nice wing-collar shirt and bow-tie.  It’s a proper bow tie, not one of those clip-on things, because I like to undo it during the evening to give myself that alluring and sophisticated look of a man incapable of tying a neck-sized piece of material into the shape of a bow. I do not want, or need, a new one.

How much discount do I get if I don’t take the shirt and tie?” I enquire perfectly legitimately like the savvy consumer that I am.

None Sir, it’s already reduced and the shirt and tie is free“, responded the sales assistant in a tone that implied this conversation was already over. (more…)
